Portstewart Strand is a Blue Flag beach

The Blue Flag is a certification by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) that a beach or marina meets its stringent standards for water quality, safety, environmental education and information. In other words, it's gorgeous, clean and the water quality is safe to swim.

It has also been officially designated an 'Area of Special Scientific Interest' and has historical significance with Neolithic, Bronze Age and Roman artefacts having been uncovered there. You can explore the 6000 year old sand dunes either alone or with a guide, as well as swim, surf, fish, build sand castles, horse ride and generally enjoy an outdoor adventure on 2 miles of sand! 

The River Bann Barmouth is the western boundary of Portstewart Strand, you can see migrating birds, fish, wild flowers, grasslands and fauna around this area of special interest.

Drive onto the beach

You can bring your car right down unto the beach, which can enhance the experience, especially with kids. Hop in an out of the car, bring your gear without having to lug it around, set up your picnic supplies from out of your car boot and enjoy an covered siesta with a priceless view. You need to pay to bring your car onto the beach in high season, but it's worth it. If you are a National Trust member you get to go for free!  There is a shop where you can buy beach related gear, ice cream, hot drinks and take in the views. 

From the Strand you can see the Mussenden Temple standing high and isolated on the conspicuous cliff. 

Portstewart Strand is the start of one of the most breathtaking walks. The 33 mile 'Causeway Coast Way' which takes you past the White Rocks, Dunluce Castle, the Giant's Causeway,  and the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge...spectacular!
